Barbarian Fight Club “Elite MMA” November 5th, 2011
Both Jason Newing and Jordan Jones made their MMA debuts at the Barbarian fight club card on November 5th.
Jason won by triangle in the second round. His opponent worked a smart, tactical gameplan that kept Jason away from his strengths, but Jason was eventually able to find a way to win.
Barbarian Fight Club Jason
Jordan fought a close fight that ended in a split decision with one judge scoring the fight 30-27 totally in his favor. Jordan stayed in the fight the entire time, and pushed himself past what he thought were his limits.

NAGA Maryland: Baltimore BJJ Kids Shine
A strong day for the kids team at the NAGA MD tournament on Oct 9th.
Dylan Young looked unstoppable, winning Gold in his Gi and No Gi divisions with conceding a single point.
Tony Augustyniak was back in top form, less than one month after returning to the mats from an injury layoff. He took Gold in the Gi, Silver in No Gi
Josh Lausch was strong in his debut tournament earning a Silver Medal amidst stiff competition.
Musashi Williams had the fight of the day, staying in the match till the end to earn his Bronze medal.

Josh, Tony, Musashi, and Dylan with the spoils of victory.

Rob traveled all the way down to Charlotte, NC to pick up his second win in the cage on Sep 10th. This was a tough fight for Rob, but he stayed tough and earned the three round decision win. Rob’s opponent was previously undefeated with a solid wrestling background and great conditioning. Rob stuck to his game plan and was prepared for how he thought the fight would go down
Check out the action here:
Special thanks to Danny, Robin, Craig and Zach for traveling down to support Rob!
We sent a solid team down to US Grappling Maryland at the Rockville Sportsplex on August 13th.
One highlight would have to be Savon Thamovong’s quick armbar win in his gi division to take third place. Check it out, it only takes 20 seconds…
This exact technique is a part of our Core Curriculum, and Savon learned it a couple of months ago. Now we have a good reference for how it should be applied in competition. Savon has been work hard and entering many competitions lately and learning and improving from each one. He took 2nd in No-Gi, 3rd in Gi for the day.
Other highlights include Randall Watkins double 1st places wins in his Gi and No Gi divisions. Watch out when he moves up to the next level!
Alex Viana has also been putting in the work on the competition side and he finally reached Gold in his no-gi division, capping it off with a quick nasty guillotine submission in his final. Here he throws down a bow and arrow collar choke variation for a gi match win:
Alex Hankewycz got 3rd in gi. The team was rounded out by Jeff Mount, Chris Wolff, Ryan Clarke, Ryan Stark, and Zach Bruno. Great job to all competitors!
Battle of the Beach August 7th, 2011 Wildwood, New Jersey
A couple of our young guns headed over to test their mettle at the Battle of the Beach in Wildwood, NJ. This tournament is one of the biggest kids tournaments in the country so its great for the kids to get out there and show their stuff.
Aaron Butler got 2nd in both his gi and no gi divisions. Would you want to square off on the mat against this guy?
Here is a video of Aaron, in his trademark red gi, in action
Dylan Young got second place in his no gi division.
Here he is in control in the mount
Dylan has been working hard in the kids classes for almost a year. He started training after his father Will joined the gym. Will recounts Dylan’s experiences on the mat
“I started training at Baltimore BJJ in April of 2010. Shortly after I loved it so much my son Dylan began training and recently he has started competing in tournaments. I can not say enough about the skills my son has learned both in the art of jiu-jitsu as well as life skills regarding behavior, respect, and competition.
In his first tournament he went against a kid both in gi and no-gi for the 3rd place match putting him on the podium and collecting a medal, and although he fought hard in both matches, he lost both, and was very disappointed that he didn’t get to get a medal and take a picture on the podium. He then entered his second tournament and had to fight the same kid to make the championship match. He won 8-0! This was the proudest moment of my life, watching him cry to me and say he just can’t beat that kid to the biggest smile I have ever scene on his face, knowing that the hard work and training paid off!
Then, last Sunday he entered the Naga Tournament in Wildwood NJ and won second place and brought home a sword, that by the way he sleeps next to at night! I personally recommend this school to any and everyone who wants to set goals for themselves or there kids, the instructors here are incredible!!! Special thanks to Neal, Nick, and most of all Lee for there devotion!”

For a while now Baltimore BJJ fighter Rob Sullivan has been leading a brave group through a 6am workout and rolling session. We are now making that an official class available to all full members of the gym. Everyone who has been attending says it great to start the day with a workout, and to know that you’ve already accomplished something for the day.
Of course at Baltimore Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is known for its ground game, however we’ve had dedicated striking classes for over two year now. We try to give people the chance to work on all aspects of combat. Usually we work with the intent of preparing for mixed martial arts, but it’s also good to see how your technique holds up against a specialist.
On July 9th Jason Newing and Steve Ortiz traveled down to Millersville, MD to take part in Pascal’s Promotions Amateur Boxing event. Both Jason and Steve are relative newcomers, having trained less than a year each. They both fought well, and represented the fighting spirit of our school. Jason picked up the win by keeping his opponent at bay using his reach and straight punches. Steve didn’t get the decision, but fought a tough opponent and stayed in the game the whole time improving each round.

This was a fun event and we are looking forward to doing more of these in the future. Thanks to everyone who helped with preparation in the gym.
